Craig A. DeCosta
Craig is the former elected Prosecuting Attorney for the County of Kauai. After 12 years as a prosecutor having handled every type of case in that office from traffic tickets to murder trials, Craig retired and went into private practice in December 2008. Craig is one of the most experienced trial lawyers on Kauai, and he will work to defend you or your loved ones against all serious criminal charges. Craig also represents landlords in eviction matters and creditors in debt collections. Craig was born and raised on Kauai.
Daniel G. Hempey
Dan has tried hundreds of cases to verdict. He has won numerous appeals in the Hawaii Supreme Court and has been named by Super Lawyers as being in the top 5% of Hawaii attorneys in his field. His practice includes personal injury, auto accident and auto injury, wrongful death, civil rights, criminal defense and appeals. He has dedicated much of his legal career to public justice with a prolific history of pro bono work. Dan is a former public defender in Montgomery County, Maryland, and has also worked as a trial attorney / appellate advisor for the Private Defender program in San Mateo County, California. He has served as a judge pro tempore in Alameda, California and currently serves as a Judge Per Diem in the Kauai Family Court. Dan is licensed to practice law in Hawaii, California, and all Federal Courts.
Michelle L. Premeaux:
Michelle was admitted to the Hawaii Bar in 2011. She worked for a Honolulu civil litigation law firm for more than three years before moving to Kauai and taking a position at the Kauai Prosecutor’s Office. Michelle left the prosecutor’s office to work as an associate for Mr. De Costa and Mr. Hempey in August 2015. Ms. Premeaux handles civil litigation.
Megan is our firm’s Senior Paralegal. With over fifteen years experience working with Dan, Megan has become an invaluable asset of the firm. Megan graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Oregon State University. Megan assists primarily in criminal defense, civil litigation, and appeal cases, and applies a meticulous attention to detail to each and every case. Megan is a mother of two young children and her time away from the firm is largely devoted to them.
Mathew M. Sagum:
Mathew is the Personal Injury Paralegal at De Costa Hempey LLC. He obtained his Associates of Science in Paralegal Studies in 2013. Prior to joining our firm, Mathew worked in Transactional Department at one of the largest firms in the State of Hawaii‘i. He is currently President Emeritus of the Hawaii Paralegal Association, and a Commissioner on the Hawaii Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission. Mathew is an advocate for people injured by the fault of another person and will aggressively work to obtain the largest recovery possible for you. Mathew is currently pursuing a specialty certificate in Personal Injury Law at Duke University.
Trina E. Sonoda:
Born and raised on the island of Kauai, Trina is a legal assistant at De Costa Hempey LLC and has worked in the firms criminal defense department assisting Craig A. De Costa since 2014. Prior to joining De Costa Hempey, Trina has assisted several attorneys in the mainland specializing in criminal law, civil litigation and probate law. Prior to entering the legal field, Trina was a volunteer Fire Fighter and worked part time as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Idaho.
